Any worse than Paul Ryan? It could be!

Paul RyanEven though Paul Ryan is a terrible Speaker of the House, things could actually get much worse considering the newest candidate for the job. In fact, this new prospect, Paul Nehlen, could make Paul Ryan look like a saint. As a person with ties to the “white nationalist” movement, Paul Nehlen could be much more dangerous than Paul right in ever thought of being.

This latest development came about because Paul Ryan has said that he probably won’t be seeking re-election for another term. His absence will leave open the much-coveted position of Speaker of the House, the number one job in the House of Representatives. The person who holds this office basically sets the tone for voting in the US House of Representatives.

Even though Paul Ryan, a devotee of Ayn Rand who taught a philosophy of selfishness and bashing the poor; something that Paul Ryan has always had a talent for, this new candidate for Speaker almost makes him look like a Sunday school teacher. Paul Nehlen is openly a “white nationalist” and racist.

Although some people may argue that Paul Ryan is also a racist because of his attacks on poor people and entitlement programs, I say that Paul Ryan is probably more driven by an ignorance and sense of entitlement, as is often the case in people of his ilk. If he is a racist, he hides it well, because this new candidate for Speaker seems to revel in his racism in a very open and overt way.

Paul Nehlen was very active in the campaign to elect Roy Moore, the child molesting Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Alabama. Nehlen was very active in his campaign, because Paul Ryan was one of the first leading Republicans to call for Moore to drop out of the race, mostly because of the controversy surrounding his low character. For this, Paul Ryan deserves some credit.

An example of Nehlen’s overt links to the “white nationalist” movement is his participation a well-known podcast called “Fash the Nation”. Apparently, the word “fash” is short for fascism.

For those people who may hate Paul Ryan, which includes me, we should stop and realize that he very well could be the lesser of two evils. Paul Nehlen is not the type of person who deserves to sit in such a high position of power as Speaker of the House of Representatives. In fact, he is the type of person who doesn’t deserve to sit in any election seat.

Separation of Church and State, Please?

Separation of Church and State, Please?

Representative Jodey Arrington(R-TX) used an obscure passage from the Bible to eight justify the proposed cuts to SNAP benefits.  Once again, the Bible is being used to justify further punishing the poor and underprivileged.  Whatever happened to the concept of separation of church and state?

Even though this concept is not in the U.S. Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence, it was advocated for by Thomas Jefferson and other members of the Founding Fathers.  It is strongly implied to be part of the First Amendment, even though it is not included.  I, for one, wish that these fundamentalist Christians would stop trying to shove their religion down my throat.  Worse yet, seeking to use religion as a weapon to be used to further vilify the poor and downtrodden citizens of the United States.

Poor people in the United States have been vilified for far too long, often because of some asshole, like Arrington, go so low as to use the Bible as some justification for punishing the poor.  No person chooses to be poor.  Poverty is something that can happen to anyone at any time.  Arrington should realize that fact because there is no guarantee that some adverse circumstance might not befall him, causing him to be forced to live in poverty.  He should understand that they bastard on that no matter how rich you are, or what position you have established, poverty can strike you at any time.  It has happened before to many people; many of whom have adopted the same level of arrogance as Arrington.

Arrington used an obscure passage from Thessalonians 3:10, which says, “those who shall not work shall not eat.”  He used this as some justification for advocating inflicting further misery on people who are already not doing w the right side cell.  I suggest that we would be better served if Arrington remembered another passage from the Bible (I forget which one) that says, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” As a poor person, I greatly resent politicians implying that I, and other poor people, are parasites not deserving of any consideration.

If he were truly a Christian, as he says, he would be advocating for an increase in SNAP benefits, not cuts.  He would also realize that he was a hypocrite because he was not practicing his faith, such as, emulating what Jesus would do.  This is what I always thought that a true Christian should do in their daily lives, not beat people up because they are the different life circumstances.  In this country had real separation of church and state, as was intended, we could forego many of these problems and the people who cause them like Arrington.

This age-old implication that poor people are lazy and unwilling to work is the most overused stereotype of poor people who exists.  I get so tired of seeing people like Arrington use their religion as a justification for imposing draconian cuts to social services every time they want to balance the budget.  I also get exhausted of the concept of separation of church and state, which I hold to be sacred, be continually ignored by these holier than thou politicos.

Separation of church and state, if used appropriately, would work very well in the United States to protect people from the same type of abuses.  Thomas Jefferson and many others understood that in Europe the church was often equal to the government, usually a King, and constructed laws that governed people’s lives.  Thomas Jefferson, realizing the potential abuses of this antiquated system, fought for separation of church and state. He was a very wise man, and we should listen to him.

Martin Shkreli Makes a Mockery Out Of the House Oversight Committee

Martin Shkreli Makes a Mockery Out Of the House Oversight Committee

Martin Shkreli, former CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals makes a mockery out of the House Oversight Committee, which he was called before to give testimony about abuses in the pharmaceutical industry.

Shkreli, as you may remember, is the former CEO of Touring Pharmaceuticals who raised the price of Daraprim, a medication used to treat people with HIV by a whopping 5000%. As you can imagine, this outrageous action by Martin Shkreli earned him the title of the “bad boy” of the pharmaceutical industry.

Recently, Martin Shkreli, was arrested on unrelated charges for borrowing from one hedge fund that he managed to pay off the debts of another hedge fund he operated. What he was doing was basically running a “Ponzi scheme” in which the investors of his hedge fund were being extorted.

As you can see from this video, Martin Shkreli seems to think the House Oversight Committee is a joke because he disrespects the committee members by smiling and smirking throughout his entire testimony, if you can call it that. Martin Shkreli really get answer any of the committee’s questions, instead pleading the fifth amendment as a smokescreen to be held accountable for his illegal actions.

I really wonder how much Martin Shkreli will be smirking and smiling when he is dressed out in an orange jumpsuit in prison, which is where he belongs?

The TPP: America’s Next Job Killer

The TPP: America’s Next Job Killer

Stop TPP fast-trackThe TransPacific Partnership Agreement, more commonly known as the TPP, is being put on the fast track, if some legislators in Washington have their way.  Opponents of the TPP are very hard to stop the Transpacific Partnership

Not only is putting the TPP on the fast track a bad idea that needs to be stopped, but makes a joke out of the entire legislative process.  In order to understand the joke, you have to understand what “fast tracking” a bill means.

Basically, what fast tracking a bill means is just throwing a bill onto the onto the floor of the Senate and House of Representatives without the bill going through the usual process of various committee hearings where legislators have a chance to pick apart a bill, study it, ask questions and generally learn what a bill does or what the bill is intended for.  In other words, a legislator is put in the unenviable position of being forced to vote on a bill without having the chance to read it through thoroughly or study it.  How is any legislator supposed to vote correctly on any piece of legislation, if they aren’t allowed to even read it through thoroughly?  But after all, isn’t that all part of the plan?

If senators and representatives were allowed to take the TPP through the usual process of holding hearings where they would hear testimony from experts, they would easily see how dangerous the TPP is, and why the opposition is opposed to it.  The TPP is nothing less than a job killer.

The reason I say this is because it will allow businesses and industries in the United States outsource even more jobs than they already have.  No wonder they are calling the TPP “NAFTA on steroids.”  Like NAFTA, the TPP puts American workers in competition with workers in Third World nations who make a much smaller wage than Americans.  Looking at the TPP from the perspective of corporate interests, who are the primary proponents of this horrible piece of legislation, why wouldn’t they want it so badly that they are willing to subvert the legislative process by pushing for this bill to be fast tracked?

The Transpacific Partnership, or as it’s more commonly known, the TPP is something that must be stopped.
