Big Pharma Executive, Alex Azar, Nominated to Be Head of HHS

President Donald Trump has nominated Alex Azar to be the new Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). This nomination is to fill the vacancy left by Tom Price after it was revealed that he had misused public funds to pay for airline tickets. It was thought that former secretary Price may have used millions of taxpayers dollars to pay for his own personal travel expenses. Price resigned a couple of months ago.

The nomination of Alex Azar is considered quite controversial in some circles because Azar was the former Director of US Operations for the Eli Lilly, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. His nomination to head the cabinet department that is in charge of this country’s health care system, and other related services, begs the question of conflict of interest. In fact, it doesn’t just “begs the question of conflict of interest” it smacks of conflict of interest. Since Alex Azar is to be head of Cabinet department that will be directly dealing with pharmaceutical manufacturers (a.k.a. big Pharma),  can be fair in his decisions when dealing with big Pharma?

In my way of thinking, his nomination should be opposed based mostly on a potential conflict of interest. There was no way that I would ever trust a former executive from big Pharma as a person who could remain objective. I almost interpreted this as big Pharma hedging its bets against probable health care reform and restructuring; something this country sorely needs. His former association with the Eli Lilly, a company that has financially benefited from US tax breaks and subsidies over the years, should automatically drop Alex Azar from consideration.

The nomination of Alex Azar is being vehemently opposed by Senator Bernie Sanders, a person who has been an enemy of big Pharma for years. The opposition of Senator Sanders pretty much seals the deal for me, because I fully trust Bernie Sanders in his judgment. This is particularly true when it comes to dealing with big Pharma. I do not trust big Pharma, nor will I ever. They have ripped off people in this country for far too many years for anyone to trust them about anything.

In a statement from Senator Sanders, he says,”During Mr. Azar’s tenure at Eli Lilly, this multi-billion-dollar corporation dodged taxes while charging Americans outrageously high prices for life-saving prescription drugs. We need an HHS secretary who is willing to take on the greed of the pharmaceutical industry and lower prescription drug prices, not one who has financially benefited from this greed.”

Since I agree 100% with Senator Bernie Sanders, especially the part about the greed of big Pharma, I think everyone who considers themselves to be a healthcare advocate should oppose this nomination. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just another plot by big Pharma to put one of its own in power.

ADAPT Protesters Arrested in Capitol Over Republican Health Care Bill

64 members of ADAPT were arrested the other day, protesting against the proposed Republican health care bill, which would have harmed many people with disabilities. It would have done so by cutting Medicaid funding to programs that help people with disabilities live independently in the community. Without these programs, it would be impossible for these people to live independently, thus forcing many people with disabilities into nursing homes. This would not only violate our civil rights as citizens of the United States but would be both morally and ethically wrong.

People with disabilities have the right to live independently within the community, and this proposed Republican health care bill would directly threaten that right. For many people with disabilities, dependent on Medicaid supported services it would mean the end of the independent living movement in the United States. This movement is based upon the rights of people with disabilities to live as others live, within the community at large.

The bill to repeal The Affordable Care Act was also known as the “skinny repeal” health care bill because it only proposed to repeal part of the ACA. Included in this “skinny repeal” more drastic cuts to Medicaid services with people with disabilities depend on for medical care and community based, independent living programs.

Thankfully, as most people know by now, this “skinny repeal” failed to pass in the U.S. Senate, much to the relief of not only people with disabilities but others are dependent on The Affordable Care Act for their basic health care needs. If this Republican sponsored “scary repeal” would have passed, an extra 16 million people would have been without any type of health care coverage. It looks like people with disabilities and others who depend on the ACA are safe, at least for a while.

It looks like the GOP idea of health care “reform”, in other words, repealing The Affordable Care Act, is over for now. However, we must all stay vigilant so the GOP doesn’t try again anytime soon.

GOP Health Care Bill Failing, Hopefully

GOP Health Care Bill Failing, Hopefully

Donald Trump, in a tweet today, may have doomed that GOP health care bill to failure. Hopefully, this draconian piece of legislation (if you can even call it that) will fail to be passed, sparing a large part of the American population from the hardship this bill will cause.

In his tweet, Donald Trump advocated a position that the GOP should just repeal Obama care (The Affordable Care Act) without passing any type of health care legislation. He seems to think that by taking away the health care of millions of citizens, the Democrats will magically “fall into line” and pass the Republican health care bill even though it is garbage. If you think this is true, he is a bigger fool than even I thought.

In other words, Trump is suggesting that denying health coverage to people who now depend on The Affordable Care Act for their basic health coverage, will be able to survive without any type of health care. In this way of thinking, Donald Trump shows himself to be a cold-blooded and selfish bastard. He is suggesting that the GOP should take away people’s health care as some type of “leverage” to shove the GOP health care bill down everyone’s throat.

Not once does he ever consider those people who are undergoing ongoing treatment (cancer treatment, AIDS-related drug therapy, or some other type of treatment that requires constant care) and the damage that could be done by an interruption, or cancellation, of their health coverage. Of course, this would require a president who was capable of analytic thinking; something that Donald Trump has shown himself to be incapable. He is hell-bent on repealing Obama care no matter the cost to the average American citizen.

Even This Conservative Concedes That Single-Payer Health Care is Coming

Source: George Will predicts Obamacare to become single-payer because of this inconvenient fact

Even This Conservative Concedes That Single-Payer Health Care Is Coming

Single-payer health care Conservative columnist, George Will, concedes that single-payer health care is going to happen, probably even under Donald Trump.  He says it will happen, despite the current state of denial of Trump and his followers, mostly because of an inconvenient truth that no one in the GOP seems willing to concede.

This inconvenient truth is the fact that if the GOP succeeds in repealing The Affordable Health Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), it will probably hurt Trump supporters the most.  If the Republicans new health care plan is implemented, an estimated 24 million Americans will be left without any type of health care coverage.  This fact is showing itself to be extremely unpopular and unacceptable to most supporters of President Donald Trump, and others in the GOP who are pushing for the repeal of Obamacare.

Single-payer health care is the next logical step in the evolution of health care in the United States.  The primary people who oppose it are those people who don’t understand it, or how it works.  Obamacare, according to George Will, was intended to be just a preliminary step before implementing a single-payer system.  Even Donald Trump says that a single-payer system is okay for Scotland.  If so, why wouldn’t it work here?  The answer is, it would work here, and quite well.Single-payer health care

The primary reason that George Will says whatever plan the GOP is trying to push will fail, and a single-payer system will put into effect is because the Republican health care plan (whatever that is) will hurt people who voted for Donald Trump more than it will anyone else.

Even though I really dislike George Will, and almost everything he stands for, I will freely concede that he makes a lot of sense, as does a single-payer health care system.

How the American Health Care Act (AHCA) Is Bad for People with Disabilities

How the American Health Care Act (AHCA) Is Bad for People with Disabilities

Alana Theriault, a friend of mine, explains how the American Health Care Act (AHCA) is bad for people with disabilities and how it endangers our right to live independently in the community.

AHCA poses a huge threat to those of us who are disabled living independently within the community, as is our right. It will either alter or cut valuable funding that we disabled people depend on for our survival. Among the items that will be affected is valuable funding that comes from the federal government to support home care services that we depend on to be able to live independently.

These funds are not only important for our independence, but for our basic survival. Forcing us into institutions will be the only alternative for many people with disabilities. It is a well-known fact that these type of skilled nursing facilities are far more expensive than providing disabled people with the necessary funding to live in the community.

Community-based services are always less expensive for the taxpayers than institutional care. That fact has been proven many times. The AHCA will gut those community-based services to the point of nonexistence. AHCA will force many disabled people, now living independently with the help of community-based services, no other choice than to give up their independent lives and be imprisoned in nursing homes.

The AHCA is the biggest threat to the independent living movement to ever come along. Hopefully, it will not pass through Congress. If it does, we disabled people are doomed.

Town Hall Meetings: Direct Democracy At Its Best

Town hall meetings on the definition of direct democracy because they allow people to express their political opinion, without repercussions from other people.

Town Hall Meetings, Direct Democracy At Its Best

Town hall meetings are the definition of direct democracy because they allow people to express their political opinion, without repercussions from other people.  Town hall meetings have got a lot of attention in the media lately because it has shown that many Americans disagree with the current policies of the GOP.

Having their origin in colonial New England, town hall meetings are a pure form of direct American democracy.  That is what makes us unique that people are currently showing in large numbers to express their differences from what is now happening in this country.

Highlighted in these town hall meetings is healthcare reform; something that the GOP fails to recognize as they push for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obama care).  Many people who have had insufficient, or no healthcare for years, but were finally given help with their medical bills.  They are angry and afraid of the prospect of losing their health care and being put back into the same vulnerable position they were in before.

Anger and indignation is one aspect of this entire situation make the idea ridiculous that some of the protesters at these meetings are paid, professionals.  Just the idea of professional paid protesters co-opting these town hall meetings for their purpose is ludicrous, and conservative news outlets know it.  Their cynicism and closemindedness cause them to underplays a bad situation that people are afraid of being forced into; having their healthcare taken away by legislators who they elected to protect their best interest.

Spreading the lie that paid protesters are driving that dissent and anger displayed at town hall meetings does a tremendous disservice to these people.  No professional paid protesters are involved in this exercise in direct democracy.  These people are only looking out for the own interests, and interests of their families.  No one is paying them.

By spreading this lie, the conservative news media is insulting the one example of direct democracy that still exists in this country.  Not to mention, it offends these people who devote their time to attending these town hall meetings and expressing their opinion, hoping that the GOP will listen to them.

I hope these GOP legislators are smart enough to hear them.  If they don’t, many of them risk losing their congressional seats.  These people may have elected them, but these legislators should never forget that the same people can also vote against them when they are up for reelection.  Hopefully, people will be smart enough to realize that they deserve better representation in Congress than what they are getting.

Senator Bernie Sanders Speaks about the High Cost of Prescription Drugs

Senator Bernie Sanders speaks about how he was one of the first organizers of a group of senior citizens, mostly women who were dealing with breast cancer, who traveled to Canada to buy prescription drugs. Senator Sanders makes a very good point by asking the question, why should a drug manufactured in the United States cost ten times more than it does in Canada.

As anyone who has followed Senator Bernie Sanders can tell you, he has always been a strong advocate for lower prices of prescription drugs. Big pharmaceutical companies (big Pharma) is actually contributing a large amount of funding to his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

What’s in the Bernie Sanders says makes a lot of sense. He articulates his point very well, if you take the time to watch this video. Senator Bernie Sanders advocacy in favor of lowering the ridiculous and exploitative high price of prescription drugs, imposed on people by big Pharma, is exemplary. His advocacy is a perfect example of how consistent he has been on advocating for consumers.

Everyone knows that big Pharma hates Senator Bernie Sanders because he is a direct threat to the gravy train that they presently enjoy. Senator Bernie Sanders is elected president of the United States, they know very well that this gravy train will stop.
