Another Perspective on Antifa: Good or Bad?

This video debate, linked to this article hosted by Chuck Todd on MTP Daily on MSNBC, gives a totally different perspective on the violence that occurred in Berkeley, on August 27, 2017. As you may know, either from watching the news or reading my last blog post, there was a violent confrontation between members of Antifa and supporters of Donald Trump.

In my previous post, I condemned Antifa for making those of us on the Left who are opposed to Donald Trump and his supporters, look bad. At that time, I have had a chance to rethink my position and now I am not condemning Antifa as bad as I did then. I have had a chance to rethink my position since that time, and in some ways, I can now give some support to Antifa. However, I still maintain that Antifa overreacted to a small number of Trump supporters and members of the alt-right, and used violent tactics that may not have been entirely necessary in this case.

I also concede that there are times when it may be necessary for Antifa and other groups opposed to Donald Trump and his supporters, to use force against force. This is true especially if members of the alt-right show up to a demonstration armed with rifles and sidearms, as they have many times in the past, including Charlottesville.

There may be times when it is necessary for Antifa to use violence against violence. I just argue that the violence that happened in Berkeley on August 27 wasn’t really necessary or called for.
