White Nationalists Becoming More Active on College Campuses

In January, the night before alt-right figure Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak at the University of California, Berkeley, two members of the white supremacist group American Renaissance got in a fistfight with other young men after they were caught plastering trees and buildings around campus with posters that proclaimed, “Embrace white identity!”

White Nationalists Becoming More Active On College Campuses

In and effort to persuade more students to buy into their doctrine of hate, White Nationalists are ramping up recruitment efforts on America’s college campuses.  White nationalists (a.k.a. white supremacists) are feeling much freer to recruit people, in particular, white students, than ever before.  This movement has not gone unnoticed by the Southern poverty Law Center (SPLC) who are also forming chapters on college campuses, across the nation.

White nationalists have become more emboldened to spread their racist message, within the last year.  Could there possibly be any connection between the election of Donald Trump, the appointment of white nationalist Steve Bannon Steve Bannon as National Security Advisor (NSA), and the current trend of Trump supporters committing acts of violence across the country? Personally, I think there is!

Although it may be unfair to place the blame entirely on the election of Donald Trump, for the resurgence of hate speech and racism across the country, but I and many others think that some of Trump’s ugly racist rhetoric during the election didn’t help the matter.  Sometimes, a small fringe element, such as the white nationalists, need to feel empowered by someone who holds a high office, to bring their activities more out in the open.  The election of someone whom they feel shares the same values (if you can call me that) as they do, often gives a “green light” to any group that deep down knows they are wrong, to start bringing their activities out into the public eye.

The very fact that white nationalists have become very sensitive about being rightfully labeled as “white supremacists” in itself says a lot.  After all, if someone is truly proud of who they are and what they feel their mission is, why do they choose to hide behind the name white nationalists.  If they truly feel that they are correct, why should they be proud of it?  The answer is; they are engaging in activities of hatred and violence that endanger public safety, and they know it.

This resurgence of racial hatred is a very ugly thing and needs to be combated at every level.  I’m very glad that groups like SPLC on campus SPLC on campus were started.  The Southern Poverty Law Center really deserves a lot of credit for stepping up and doing something proactive to fight the rise of white nationalism.

Reporter Dale Hansen, calls Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick A Fool

Dallas sports reporter, Dale Hansen of WFAA8 ABC called out Texas Lt Governor, Dan Patrick for an insulting and ludicrous interview he gave on Fox News. This video is a brilliant commentary on the tragedy that took place last week in Dallas, Texas. It’s a shame that more journalists don’t have the balls to say what Dale Hansen said.

Lt Governor Dan Patrick, a well-known right-wing Tea Party supporter tried to cast blame on everyone, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and social media for the recent tragedy. In his statement, Patrick said:

I do blame people on social media with their hatred towards police. I do blame — I saw Jesse Jackson, I think it was on Fox last night, calling police racist without any facts. I do blame former Black Lives Matter protests,” Patrick said in an interview first picked up by the Texas Tribune. “I grew up in a world, I’ve been around long enough, that we’ve always had bad people, we’ve always had dangerous people, but the general republic respected the police. Too many in the general public who aren’t criminals but have a big mouth are creating situations like we saw last night.

The main point that Dale Hansen was trying to make was that Americans have become complacent, mostly because mass shootings and other incidents of ugly violence have become so commonplace in our society that many people have a tendency to not pay attention and put these incidents on the back burner.

I agree 100% with the sentiments expressed by Dale Hansen, and I believe that mass shootings and other cases of horrible violence have needlessly become far too common, to the point that many people do put this type of thing into the back of their minds. This is wrong because, as a society, when one citizen kills another, it’s just plain wrong.

Instead of pointing the finger of blame at people who don’t deserve it, people in this country need to take a good hard look at ourselves, and ask the big question; what is going on in this country and how to resolve this ugly problem?

Hollywood’s Latest Insult To the Disabled: “Me before You”

Disability rights activists have rallied against the normalization of suicide for disabled people in Me Before You. Protesters told BuzzFeed News the scope of the protest is unprecedented.

Hollywood‘s Latest Insult To the Disabled: “Me before You”

Me Before YouAs a person with a disability, I greatly resent the Hollywood stereotypes of what it’s like to live with a disability and don’t even have a clue. Once again, Hollywood stereotypes are creating great harm to the disability rights movement and all disabled people with its latest insult, entitled “Me Before You“. This latest film, which is supposed to be a romance, instead becomes nothing more than just another “disability snuff film.”

The Hollywood stereotypes erect a type of barrier that is far harder to correct that a physical barrier. “Me Before You” creates what we call an attitudinal barrier, which is far more difficult to correct that a physical barrier. A physical barrier can be altered or done away with by constructing something differently, such as installing a ramp, widening a doorway, or some other type of construction work. On the other hand, an attitudinal barrier is far harder to correct. It can only be changed through informing and educating people about what it’s like to live with a disability; something that Hollywood executives haven’t got a clue about. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be keen to listen to us or what we have to say about films like “Me Before You.”

However, since the disability rights movement and people with disabilities, in general, have turned out with a huge protest that could severely damage profits, which is what Hollywood executives care most about, they might finally take some note of us. Unfortunately, any changes probably won’t happen very fast. The only thing that happens quickly in Hollywood seems to be pocketing the money they make from films that exploit people like “Me Before You”.

A few years ago, there was also a considerable controversy about the movie, “Million Dollar Baby“, a film that has the lead actress begging to be killed after she has a severe spinal cord injury that leaves her paralyzed. This time, disabled people are even angrier and insulted and are turning out in large numbers to protest “Me Before You”. Hollywood executives have been caught off guard by the scope of the current protests which in many places is still ongoing. I’m pleased to say that these protests are growing and getting bigger and more vocal. We have succeeded in drawing the attention of some of the largest newspapers and news outlets in the country.

Ted Cruz: Right-Wing Religious Nut Job To The Core

After reading this article in Mother Jones, I am totally convinced more than I already was that Ted Cruz is nothing more than a total right-wing nut job. In fact, his extremism convinces me that he would be dangerous to have as President of the United States. His viewpoint makes him sound more dangerous than Donald Trump as president. I have a pretty good idea that you will agree with me, after reading the article.

When Ted Cruz was Solicitor General, which basically is the same thing as Attorney General in other states, he defended a ridiculous law on the books that bans the sale and use dildos and other such sexual devices. When I first read the article I thought that it was some type irreverent joke by Mother Jones magazine, as they had been known to do in the past. But, this entire thing actually happened. Ted Cruz actually had the unmitigated gall to defend a lot that said that people have  no right to sexually pleasure themselves in whatever way they chose. After reading this article, I also asked myself the question, “how much taxpayers money of the people of Texas was wasted on this ridiculous court case?”

Ted Cruz, as most people know by now, states that life begins at conception and that abortion should be banned. This opinion is entirely based in religion, and as far as I’m concerned has no place in governing the American people. His physician about abortion, and now the use of sex toys, are a violation of the U.S. Constitution which clearly states that there is a separation of church and state. Personally, I for one am a total defender on this separation, and always have been. Legislation of this type is downright dangerous, in my opinion, because it allows the government to overstep itself and reach into citizens personal lives.

Although this article may sound funny at first glance, I believe that it points out just how steeped in hypocrisy people like Ted Cruz really are. On one hand, they are always advocating for a smaller government and less government overreach. On the other hand, they are always proposing stupid legislation like this ban on sex toys. They also never seem to know how to enforce these types of stupid laws. This just serves to stress the level of hypocrisy people like Ted Cruz, and other religious right-wing nuts like him represent.

It never ceases to amaze me how these types of people like Ted Cruz are always advocating in favor of stupid laws like regulating sex toys, marijuana, or whether or not a woman has a right to choose what happens to her body. They never seem to squawk about government overreach when it comes to personal decisions that everyone has a right to make.

But, when our government tries to enact and enforce important legislation like, gun control, laws for environmental protection, or regulate the practices of big business, and other legislation intended to help our society, they always complain about big government and how it overstep itself.

When are people like Ted Cruz going to see that they cannot have it both ways?

The Rash of Gun Violence in the United States

The Rash of Gun Violence in the United States

gun violenceThe rash of gun violence in the United States has reached epidemic proportions. It often seems like there is some type of mass shooting every week. The only way I can see to solve this problem, or at least mitigate the problem of gun violence is for our legislators to finally grow some balls and enact some form of effective gun-control legislation. Our current gun-control legislation is totally inadequate in solving the problem of gun violence in the United States.

The position that president Obama on gun control seems rather shaky at best. Despite his executive order, given earlier this week, in many ways seems to be paying lip service to citizens who expect him to be a leader in protecting the American people from gun violence. So far, President Obama’s position on gun control seems to be greatly lacking any real substance.

After the massacre of schoolchildren in Sandy Hook, President Obama called out for effective gun-control legislation. Apparently, either our legislators didn’t hear him or ignored him. No one stepped forward with any type of effective gun-control legislation, as far as I can see. Most of them just take lip-service to the idea of gun-control in the United States, as they usually do when a mass shooting happens. It almost seems that our lawmakers are living in some state of denial about gun violence, and are somehow thinking that it will magically go away without doing anything real. By their negligence, on the subject of gun violence and gun control, they are betrayed not only the American people, but their oath of office.

I can’t think of anything I would like to see better than some type of gun control in this country. It is something that has been here for a long time. I just hope it’s not too late to stem the epidemic of mass shootings, which have gone on for several years. It would be real nice if legislators in this country would stop bowing to the special interest groups, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), and put some type of gun control. We can no longer ignore the problem of gun violence in the United States.

Can Capitalism Be Fixed, Or Is It Time to Junk It?

Income inequality is better termed structural racism. White people earn more money with less education than black people and consistently have half
black people. And, as new research has shown, “family wealth” predicts outcomes for 10 to 15 generations. Those with extreme wealth owe it to events going back years ago, according to research published by the New Republic – an era when it wasn’t unusual for white Americans to benefit from an economy dependent upon widespread, underpaid black labor in the form of slavery. Income inequality is better viewed as structural sexism. Women earn 78 cents on the dollar overall compared to white men, but black women only earn 64 cents and Latinas 56. Women are also routinely discriminated against economically for bearing children. Income equality is better viewed as structural child abuse. In the United States, one in five children needs government help to eat. As Aisha Sultan recently wrote in the Education Writers Association, if a 30-child classroom looked like the nation at large, seven of the children would be living in poverty, six would be victims of abuse and one would be homeless. These kids aren’t just unequal; they are never offered the opportunity to achieve equality. Income inequality is better viewed as economic genocide, which shortens the lives of the poor. As the New York Times bluntly put it last year, “where income is higher, life spans are longer”. For one of the most jarring examples of how this plays out, look no further than the Ferguson Report, which shows how just in St Louis County, the average life expectancy ranges from 91 in the whitest neighborhood to 56 in the poorest, blackest neighborhood.

Can Capitalism Be Fixed, Or Is It Time to Junk It?

capitalism and inequalityCapitalism, in its present form, cannot be fixed and should be junked. Conditions is this country have degenerated so far that present-day capitalism is proving itself to be increasingly dysfunctional. Capitalism works out okay for the 1% of the population that controls the majority of wealth and resources, but for the average American, especially the poor, its effects can be devastating.

Capitalism has shown itself to be a failed system, except for the wealthy and corporate America. Even the middle class, although they may deceive themselves into thinking otherwise, are being hurt because of our present day system of capitalism. The average working member of the middle class earns as much less money than they did in the 70s. It has gotten to the point where the middle class in this country is disappearing.

A more proper name for the present day system of capitalism, would be corporatism. Capitalism, by itself, can be a system where a good number of people, including the middle class and poor, can be treated fairly. Unfortunately, as it now stands, only the 1% is treated to anything. Under our present day system, no one but the 1% is being treated anywhere near fairly. The above quote is well worth reading, because it gives a true and accurate picture of the abuses of capitalism of today.

Personally, I think that the only way that capitalism can be saved is for it to not be involved in our political process in any way, shape, or form. After all, capitalism is supposed to be purely an economic system, not a political force. However, since capitalism has transformed itself into corporatism, things have drastically changed for the worst. Corporatism now uses his money to control this country’s democracy. Even the highest court in the land, the US Supreme Court, is not free of corporate influence. After the controversial “Citizens United” decision by the Supreme Court, corporate entities are actually given the same rights as citizens.  This decision also allows corporations to donate whatever amount of money they want to any political candidate(s). It basically allows corporations to buy the political process, which undoubtedly has the effect of allowing corporations to control our democracy.  In this aspect, capitalism has gone way too far in influencing our day-to-day life. There is absolutely no way that a corporation should be considered an equal citizen.

Capitalist influence over our political process has gotten to the point that our democracy is in danger of disappearing. Big money seems to be more important to our so-called “leaders” then the well-being of the citizens of this country. Capitalist entities (a.k.a. corporations) has brought out just about every politician in Washington DC, and the state capitals. It has gotten to the point where this one very controversial Supreme Court decision has put our democracy in danger of disappearing entirely, and the United States turned into a oligarchy.

That’s why I think that the capitalist system should be junked. We need to start with something fresh because capitalism has proven itself to be such a detriment to American society.

The Dec. 27 editorial (“Income inequality grows”) and E. J. Dionne’s accompanying column (“Can democracy survive this era of inequality?”) eloquently pointed the finger at a planetary crisis — global capitalism — that’s deeply entwined with our other

Martin Shkrelli Learns That Karma Can Be a Real Bitch

The 32-year-od Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO and Wall Street player became a source of schadenfreude on a mass scale Thursday with the news that he had been arrested for securities fraud.

Source: VIDEO: ‘Pharma Bro’ and Hedge Fund Profiteer Martin Shkreli Arrested for Fraud | Truthdig: Drilling Beneath the Headlines

Martin Shkrelli Learns That Karma Can Be a Real Bitch

Martin Shkrelli, head of Turing Pharmaceuticals, Inc., was arrested today for fraud and taken into custody remember, is the person who raised the price of a antiviral drug, used by people with HIV, by an unconscionable 5000%. If today’s arrest doesn’t make you believe that “what goes around comes around,” isnt true, I don’t know what will.

Even though the charges brought against Martin Shkrelli wasn’t about the grossly overpriced drug that is company produces, it really did my heart good to see the videotape of his arrest, and him being walked out in handcuffs, by the FBI. Hopefully, justice will be served and Martin Shkrelli will do some serious time in prison. As far as I’m concerned, he deserves everything he gets. He has already earned the unsavory title as the “most hated man in America,” because of his obscene profiteering at the expense of people with HIV.

Today’s charges stem from Martin Shkrelli defrauding investors in a hedge fund that he operated before becoming CEO of Turing pharmaceuticals, Inc. Apparently, he didn’t disclose certain financial information about his hedge fund, that he is legally required to disclose. When that particular hedge fund starting to fail, Martin Shkrelli started another one. Then, he is alleged to have used funds from the second hedge fund to pay off the debts of investors of the first hedge fund.

When this hedge fund also started to fail, he formed a pharmaceutical company, then used the profits to pay off his creditors from the other two hedge funds is started and managed. Basically, what Martin Shkrelli was doing was running a Ponzi scheme, like Bernie Madoff. Officials are calling Martin Shkrelli a “millennial Bernie Madoff.”

Even though today’s arrest of Martin Shkrelli is important, unfortunately, he is just the tip of the iceberg in an evil corrupt system. Today’s arrest may send some kind of message to corporate America that they are not invulnerable, or “too big to fail”, it will actually have little effect in cleaning up our system.

I’m sure we all know the truth that for every one Martin Shkrelli who gets caught playing dirty, there are probably a couple of hundred more just like him who will most likely get away with it. This type of behavior is not unheard of in corporate America. To me, it just proves what an evil and corrupt system capitalism really is. It also makes it very obvious that we the people need to take back our economic system. We all need to collectively pull down on that big handle and flush capitalism down the toilet, because that’s where it belongs.
